Shadows in the Forest

***Family Favorite***

I asked the kids which game they wanted to review first, and they all immediately said “Shadows in the Forest!”

This is a tag style all against one board game where one person is ‘it’ while the rest play together to get the shadowlings all together at the same location. If they are caught out of the shadows, they are frozen in place where they can’t be unfrozen until another shadowling shares their spot for two full turns. The game is played in the dark, and the darker the better. Great game for a power outage for sure.

The game is advertised as 2-6 players and ages 8 and up. It takes 15-20 minutes to play.

Our thoughts on the game:

Though the game is advertised as 8+, younger kids could easily play this game so long as they have help. I would recommend keeping them in the role of Shadowlings. Though our resident 6 year old played as the Lantern “it”, it is difficult hold his attention.

Why this game is a great family game: all ages can play, from tiny tykes to grandparents, and because the Shadowlings are played cooperatively, if a younger family member gets bored or has to use the bathroom, it doesn’t disrupt the game. You just keep playing for them.

Mom Thoughts : if playing with young ones, it’s good to have an adult playing to help keep them on track and to guide the game. Older kids can easily play on their own.

Werewolf Thoughts (9 years old) : great power out game, really fun game, but if you are afraid of the dark it is not a good game for you.

Rosie Thoughts (8 years old): it’s fun to play with different numbers of friends, from one to more.

Robot Thoughts (6 years old) : I like being “it”

Lizard Thoughts (4 years old) : I like it

All of my kids love this game, though if a specific game drags on, my boys tend to get distracted. Overall fun game for all ages.
